If real estate agents predictions hold true, we’re still in a very strong seller’s market and for those who are selling their homes because that’s money in your pocket to help you move. However, if you’re trying to buy a house while selling your current one… It can be tricky. You aren’t going to have that money from the house you sold to help manage costs.
We have five money-saving tips that can help you move across the state without breaking the bank.
1. Avoid buying moving supplies
As if buying a house and moving across the state wasn’t expensive enough, moving supplies are an added cost that aren’t necessary. Instead of buying new boxes, paper, and bubble wrap, reach out to your community via social media or a community bulletin board to ask for supplies. You might even be able to go to retail locations to ask for boxes that they’d otherwise recycle. You can also cut costs by using clothing like socks, shirts, and towels to protect breakable items.
2. Have a yard sale
When you’re packing, ask yourself if you really need to take everything with you. If not, then this is the perfect time to host a yard sale! Not only can you reduce how much stuff you need to take with you, but you can earn some extra money to help with that move.
3. Pack strategically
Packing strategically means packing in a way that requires fewer boxes, thus saving you space, time, and money. Don’t be afraid to place items inside one another rather than throwing everything and anything in an empty box.
4. Cancel utilities
Usually, when we’re moving, we’ll just transfer our utilities from the old house to the new one. We have to plan when our utilities are cut off perfectly as to avoid paying for service at two places, but it doesn’t always work as planned. We say, instead of trying to plan your shut-off date perfectly with your move-in date, cancel your services altogether and start fresh at your new home. You can shop around for the best deals and see what perks services offer for new customers.
5. Rent a moving container
A popular way to cut costs is to rent a moving container to pack up your entire house, rather than paying for several truckloads to go back and forth between Point A and Point B. When renting a moving container, you can pack up your house in your own time and when you’re ready to go, you can call the container’s shipping department to let them know where to take the container. Easy peasy!
Moving to a new location is stressful, costly, and something we face with a tinge of dread. However, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom – or at least not a drain on your wallet.
