No, don’t worry – nothing quite as scary as The League of Gentlemen here! No, instead, we’re going to be talking a little about something much more pleasant – the new advert from that trusty old banking brand, TSB.
Think of a few different banking ads – they’re all the same, aren’t they? “We are the only bank who can offer YOU a 95% mortgage” this, “bank with us and get these various benefits for a small monthly fee” that. When was the last time you weren’t bored to tears by a bank’s commercial?
We’re willing to bet you can’t even remember. However, that’ll soon change, as soon as you watch TSB’s latest offering, which is embedded into this very article. We’ll give you a few minutes – click play on the YouTube vid and settle in for two and a half minutes of animated goodness.
Finished? What did you think? Pretty good, no? The beautiful animation stands strong on its own, but the message of the ad is certainly helped by the silky smooth voiceover done by none other than Sir Patrick Stewart. It’s certainly not the hard-sell type of advert we’re used to – you don’t even known which bank it’s all about until the strapline appears at the end, warmly welcoming the return of local banking.
The advert tells the story of the bank’s inception with the Reverend Henry Duncan at the helm, and how it was initially set up to help the local community. It then heads into some rather dark territory, a representation of the financial bubble’s recent bursting, and the loss of trust that came about with it. They are trying to say that although the world may have changed over time, they still work by the original principals and ideals that TSB was set up with.
It’s the kind of advertising that just… works. It’s emotional, it’s engaging, and it tells a powerful, interesting story. It’s not trying to push 3999% APR down our throats, but rather attempting to convey to us an ideal – local banking has returned.
